What Are The Benefits of Coated Steel Roofing

We’ve seen coated steel grow in popularity in recent years, with more developers, architects and homeowners choosing it for their projects. You don’t have to research it for long to understand why – it is an excellent cost-effective alternative to zinc, with a modern aesthetic and a variety of colours to choose from. We have used both Lindab and GreenCoat PLX coloured steel on roofing and wall cladding projects and have been very pleased with the results.
Here’s our run down of the top four benefits of choosing coated steel.
1. Longevity
Steel has an impressive lifespan of 60 years, and we offer a warranty of up to 50 years on our steel roofs and cladding.
This long lifespan is of course dependent on correct installation and build up of your roof. Be sure to use a contractor who is registered with the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC). As members of the FTMRC, we have regular vetting and were most recently rated “Excellent”, the highest possible rating.
The steel roof on this rural barn conversion looks stunning – the client recently told us how happy he is with the end result and mentioned that visitors to his home always comment on how great the roof looks. We are sure visitors will be commenting on it for many decades to come!
2. Extensive colour and texture range
Our coated steel is available in a range of colours which are applied as RAL codes, making it easy to match to other products such as windows and doors. This development of 30 homes in Mannamead used anthracite steel wall cladding which looks very modern alongside the grey windows and doors. The horizontal seams give a stunning finish.
3. Durability and long-lasting finish
The coating that is applied to the steel is highly durable and resistant to UV light and scratches. This project in Ivybridge chose to have steel wall cladding as well as roofing for a zero maintenance, long lasting finish to the whole building.
4. Lifelong joints around penetrations
Steel can be soldered to achieve a lifelong joint around penetrations such as roof lights, flue pipes, etc. This makes steel a great choice if your roof includes these features, as was the case for this project in Ringwood. Our other cost-effective alternative to zinc is aluminium, which is not able to be soldered and so is generally not the best option for a roof featuring many penetrations.
