How can you make your zinc roof unique

Zinc roofs come in all shapes and sizes, and we can achieve your desired aesthetic through your choice of design, finishes and details.

If you’re keen to make your roof unique, here’s a few suggestions to consider.

1 – Seam widths

Generally we plan a roof to create relatively even seam widths throughout, ensuring the zinc aligns nicely with any windows or roof lights. However there are so many more options when it comes to seam widths! You could make them smaller to have more frequent seams – who wouldn’t want to see more of our beautiful hand crafted seams?! You could even consider random panel sizes to avoid a uniform look, as we did on this wonderful home in Ivybridge.

2 – Batten roll

An exciting alternative to standing seam, batten roll was the first form of zinc roofing. This lesser used option delivers more structured seams and a more traditional look. On this barn conversion, we installed natural zinc with large batten rolls as the client wanted a robust, traditional aesthetic.

3 – Shingles

As seen on this church steeple, shingles can provide a very traditional yet unique look. These were a fish scale shape but we’ve also seen diamond or rhomboid work well.

Not sure about this for your whole project? You could consider shingles on a particular wall or detail such as a balcony to create an interesting focal point.

4 – Wall cladding

Why stop with the roof?! Consider adding some wall cladding to your project! It can look stunning alongside render, stone or timber cladding, and provides a nice visual flow connecting the roof to the rest of the building. With wall cladding you can even consider having horizontal seams, which delivers the same structural integrity as the more common vertical seams.

The wall cladding on this project in Salcombe gives it a very modern aesthetic and results in a stunning finish.

5 – Colour

Believe it or not, not all metal roofs are grey! We have installed many stunning roofs using coloured zinc from VMZinc’s Pigmento range which includes green, red, blue and brown. The end result is still maintenance free with the same structural integrity as our most popular pre-weathered grey zinc. The coloured zinc is more expensive but can have real impact on your project and help tie in your building with its surrounding natural environment.

This development of apartments in Tavistock chose to have green and white zinc wall cladding. Alongside the stone facade it provides a lovely finish.
