How Much Does a Zinc Roof Cost

So, you’ve seen photos of stunning zinc projects, you’ve heard about its environmental credentials and think it might be the perfect material for your project…but how much would it cost?

The cost can vary considerably based on the details of the project such as size, penetrations (e.g. roof lights), and finish. Here’s a quick run down of some key factors that impact cost.

1 – Size
It goes without saying that the larger the area you need to cover, the more your zinc roof will cost! However, the cost per square metre is reduced with larger roofs, as there are some more labour intensive parts of the roof installation that are required even on the smallest of roofs. An example of this is the details at the ridge and eaves, which take a similar amount of time irrespective of the length of each panel.

2 – Pitch
Zinc can be installed on roofs of five degree pitch or more. For significantly higher pitch roofs, the installation time (and thus labour cost) increases as ease of movement becomes more difficult.

3 – Complexity
The more details in your roof, the more time and craftsmanship required to fit around them with our bespoke flashings. Additionally, choosing to have a valley in your roof is a nice architectural detail but does impact cost. This project has a variety of details such as dormer windows and valleys. A particularly complex area is where the garage and porch roofs meet, with a junction between a valley, capping, roof tray and soffit/fascia. This project was vetted by the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC) and rated Excellent – they even took a photo of the junction to use as a positive example on their training days!

4 – Additional details
Choosing to have your guttering, fascia or soffit installed using zinc can have a real impact on both the cost and the final finish of your property. As you can see in this project, the matching fascia stands out due to the fantastic overhang detail.

5 – Installer

Different installers will of course vary slightly in terms of price. We aim to be extremely competitive and from our testimonials you can see we have many happy customers. It’s important to keep an eye out for wildly cheap quotes – always look for the installer to be:

  • Experienced and specialist in zinc which takes many years – ask how long they personally have been installing zinc.
  • Registered with the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC) – you can also check out the results of their most recent FTMRC vetting.
  • An approved contractor of the main manufacturers, VMZinc and RheinZinc.
  •

Head to our zinc page to check out our credentials.

With all this in mind, we generally find that the average price for a zinc roof is between £80 and £120 per square metre. For a more detailed idea of costs for your project, we would be happy to provide you with a quote.

If zinc stacks up to be out of budget, we have some fantastic alternatives. Aluminium or steel generally work out at 15-25% less than zinc, and can come in a zinc finish for a very similar aesthetic. They have a shorter lifespan but still a great warranty and are good options to consider. If you’d like to discuss what material might be best for your project please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
